Anybody who plays contact sports is clearly more prone to harm; but we need to remember that of all the things that can that can happen during an athletic event, injuries to the head and teeth are the most common. They are so common that in numerous parts of the country dentists will only practice sports dentistry and getting 1 or 2 teeth knocked out is frequently considered part of the game. Dental traumas are seldom irreversible, as doctors nowadays are able to repair almost any illness or injury that occurs. Prevention is really the first line of defense because it is so easy to do no matter what sport is being played, or what age the player is. Using something as simple as an over the counter mouth guard will help avoid as much as 2/3’s of the dental incidents that occur on the playing field. While these are not the most comforting things to wear out on the field, and they often wear out faster, they could preserve a person’s teeth in the long haul. If these are just too painful and distracting for players to wear, they can choose the molded mouth guards that are boiled in hot water to soften them up before put in the athlete’s mouth. Once soft, they will mold themselves to the player’s unique mouth shape, and provide choice protection, as well as comfort. These work better for minors and anyone who has braces on their teeth because they will promptly conform, and can be exchanged easily as the player matures. If a person is completely committed to his game, he can produce a tailored made mouth guard fashioned by a Frisco family dentist. These are created to fit exactly the jaw they were prepared for, making them much easier to wear and much less of a distraction during the game. They are made to fit each individual tooth, and prepared from a higher level of plastic, so the teeth can get the best protection available. If by some chance someone does get a tooth knocked out during a game, it is vitally important that they get treated right away. It is feasible to save a tooth and have it grafted back into the mouth, but only your Plano, Texas dentist will be able to determine that for sure. If there is any pain in a tooth, swelling of the gums, or any slow discoloration, this could indicate that some unseen problem has occurred, and that person should really go see a dentist right away. If a tooth is actually knocked out, package the tooth in saliva or milk, and bring the tooth- and the patient to a dentist promptly. You will be amazed at what the modern day dentist is capable of.
